Beach walks, ocean views and an easy pace

White Rock is a small city of about five square kilometres on Semiahmoo Bay, and daily life here leans toward the water. Many people start the day with a walk along the promenade, which runs almost the full length of the beach from East Beach to West Beach, with restaurants, cafés and ice cream shops across Marine Drive.

Up the hill, Uptown around Johnston Road has groceries, services and more shops, and Five Corners has a village feel of its own. The streets are steep in places, so the views are wide, and the climb home is part of the routine.

Condos, view homes and a few townhomes

Condos make up a large share of homes in White Rock. Low-rise buildings line the hillside and the streets near the beach, and newer high-rise towers sit Uptown near Johnston Road. Townhomes are fewer than in neighbouring South Surrey. Detached homes are mostly on the slopes above the water, where lots tend to be smaller and many houses are built to make the most of the ocean view. You will find older homes alongside newer rebuilds on the same street. Some condo buildings have age or rental rules, so we always read the bylaws with you.

• The White Rock Pier, about 470 metres long, and the waterfront promenade, where leashed dogs are welcome all day from October 1 to March 31 and early mornings the rest of the year (never on the pier)
